An inspiring introduction to playing music – perfect for lockdown!
Start learning an instrument, understand core musical concepts, compose and perform, explore music and achieve an accredited award.
Discover Music is a unique online introduction to music, developed by professional musicians and curriculum experts at Greenwich Music School.
Children develop a strong grounding in musical understanding at Key Stage 2 level, achieve a nationally recognised Arts Award, and enjoy learning to play a chosen instrument.
The course uses the latest online collaboration and education technology, and is suitable for anyone with access to a device and internet connection. It’s taught in small groups of up to six children, and pupil progress is documented through both teacher feedback and self-reflection.
Discover Music is a fun and holistic introduction to music, ideal for children interested in finding out more about music and what it’s like to learn an instrument, covering:
Practical understanding of core musical concepts and music notation at Key Stage 2 level
Composition and performance
Exploration of music and how it connects to other art forms
Find out what a professional musician does, and the skills and opportunities they have
Five paired or small-group instrument lessons, building foundation technical and performance skills
Reflection on learning and support to choose next steps
Those completing the whole course will be eligible to receive an Arts Award, accredited to Discover level.
The course is delivered through ten core weekly sessions. In addition children choose an instrument pathway, and receive five 20-minute lessons on an instrument of their choice.
Children will learn about and research other instruments, helping them to make informed choices about the next steps in their musical learning.
The course is developed by pianist, education expert and Director at Greenwich Music School Bethan Scolding MMus together with Kodály and primary education specialist Fiona Long B.Ed, using the latest educational research, experience in the professional music industry and decades of experience teaching to postgraduate level.
