Are you currently pregnant, researching all the things you need to buy for your newborn? Maybe you are a first time mum? You might be feeling quite daunted, wondering what kit you need! Or maybe you just need a little reminder of what newborn baby essentials you really need.
We are sure that you’ll have lots of people giving you lots of different advice. Here at Club Hub we would like to help by giving you an easily digestible list. We hope this will help you shop effectively over a few months. We aim to make this cost effective and less stressful for you too.
So First Things First…who is Club Hub?
Club Hub are a kids directory for kids aged 0-18. On our directory you will find plenty of mum and baby classes near you we also have an antenatal category now so that to can find antenatal services before your baby has even arrived. These antenatal services may include private midwives, doulas, hypnobirth instructors, antenatal classes, baby scan clinics etc.
So without further ado here is our newborn baby essentials…
Just for Mum
Many new mums or pregnant mums put themselves at the bottom of the list when looking for new baby items. However, we are putting you at the top! It is so important that you spend a little time on yourself too! So if you are looking for a little gift why not treat yourself to a spa, a lovely spa eco box. , a Neal’s yard treat box or even a pregnancy mum yoga class or hypnobirthing course to help you relax yourself and help your body prepare for birth!
Newborn Baby Essentials – Travel
Getting around with your newborn will be really important. It’s essential that you get yourself a comfortable pushchair and/or baby carrier as you are going to be using this daily up to when your baby can confidently walk. It is also beneficial to get a travel system or carrier that can grow with your baby so that you are not having to spend lots of money as soon as they grow.
- A pushchair – This is an essential newborn baby piece of kit. It will allow your baby to rest whilst you go for a stroll around town, it is practical and in our opinion essential! (Watch a clip of one of our brand reps reviewing a fabulous Venicci Travel system pushchair)
- A Baby Carrier – a baby carrier is a great way to promote bonding for you and your baby. It also gives you a way to keep the baby close whilst you tend to other children or get bits done around the house. On a previous blog one of our brand reps reviewed the Hana baby carrier and thought it was great!
Newborn Baby Essentials – Feeding
However you chose to feed your baby there is no doubt you will be researching endlessly for the best bottles, pumps, sterilisers etc.
Here are a few essentials:
- Bottles and steriliser If you plan to feed your baby via formula or combi feed you will need bottles and steriliser. Our brand reps who reviewed the Philips bottles and Steriliser really liked them. They found the bottles really easy to combine with breastfeeding
- Breast pump – Have a look around for what kind of features you feel you’d need. Our brand rep reviewed the Medals Swing breast pump in our previous “best buys for new mums“ blog and found this was great for her
- Breast pads, nursing bra – Essential if you plan to breastfeed
- Breastfeeding tops – These lovely breastfeeding tops are also great if you plan to breastfeed
Newborn Baby Essentials – Teething
Those pesky teeth poking through can really upset your baby! These are some newborn baby essentials when it comes to teething.
Newborn baby essentials – Sleep
Sleep…something new mums and dads can only dream of. Club Hub recognises that sleep is a very important thing for little ones and for mums too.
The NHS recommends that your baby sleeps in the same room as you for the first six months.
- A bedside crib such as “next to me” or Sleep Tight Baby Bed is a safe place for your baby to rest and sleep, day and night. It has been tested to the very latest and most relevant safety standards for a baby’s overnight bed
- Cot or cotbed – babies usually grow out of their moses basket by six months old, at which point they can be moved into a cot or cotbed. The NHS recommend you buy a new mattress for every baby.
- Sheets/Blankets/Sleeping bag – Quilts and pillows should not be used until your baby is over 12 months. Until then ensure baby either has a cellular blanket, and purchase lots of fitted sheets. Sleeping bags are really good too as they keep baby nice and warm without the risk of any blankets going over your newborn’s face (Cot bumpers against NHS advice)
Newborn Baby Essentials – Bath Time
Bath time is such a lovely soothing part of the day for you and your baby. It’s a great way to establish a routine too. A bath at night time can signal to your little one that it’s time for them to settle down and sleep.
- All you really need is a warm soft cloth and water when your baby is newborn
- Be very careful using products on your babies soft, delicate and sensitive skin.
- Having said that, we absolutely love ‘The Childs Farm newborn and baby range‘ it has been specially developed to care for baby’s delicate skin.
- Soft towels are essential too
- We also recommend nappy barrier cream
- A thermometer to take your little ones temperature
- Infant paracetamol is always very handy to have stored in a cupboard just in case your little one does have a fever.
Newborn Baby Essentials – Clothing
You may be surprised how many times you have to change your baby in one day. However, try not to buy too much. Newborns grow very quickly, so that any clothes probably won’t fit them for more than a few months.
For essentials we advise:
- 10 bodysuits
- 10 sleepsuits with built in socks and scratch mitts
- 3 cardigans to pop on top of sleepsuits if cold
- When you’re out and about, take a warm pramsuit and a hat to keep your baby’s head warm.
You will probably be given lots of other lovely clothing that you will want to dress your baby in. However, remember comfort should be above all else. Ensure that your baby is comfortable in the clothes they have on.

Here are some newborn classes that you may want to consider have a look at from the Club Hub directory:
