Published on 10th June 2023 by Tessa Robinson

How to help keep your child cool when it’s hot? There’s no getting away from it, it’s HOT HOT HOT.  Hot weather means the chance for lots of fun, but sometimes hot weather can also make us all a little bit grumpy. So what can you do to keep your child cool when it’s hot?

Here’s a few ideas from the Club Hub team. This is more aimed towards younger children, however there is no reason why older children wouldn’t also love joining in with some of these ideas too. Please do ensure whilst doing all of these activities to help keep your child cool when it’s hot to keep them in the shade, apply suncream, ensure they have a sun hat on, keep them hydrated and if possible do make sure they come inside during the midday sun (between 12-3).

Idea 1. Make a Den

Keep your child cool when it's hot. Idea 1. Make a DenA fantastic way to keep your child cool when it’s hot is to make a den. It doesn’t have to be elaborate. All you need is a cotton sheet and a few chairs or props. If the sheet is long enough you could peg it to your washing line and make a tepee style tent. However simply propping over a few garden chairs or tables would work fine too. Children absolutely love somewhere to escape draw and have a few cool snacks and an ice cool drink.

Idea 2. Make potions

There is something about pouring water from one container to another that children absolutely love. Add a few drops of food colouring and they will be happy for a good half an hour or so depending on their attention span. This is such a fun way to keep your child cool when it’s hot.

If you like you could semi freeze the bottles to make the water even colder or add ice. This is not only a great way to keep your child cool when it’s hot but also a fantastic sensory activity too (link to sensory article). Use lots of different shape and size bottles, this is also a fantastic learning opportunity to talk about ordering, and 3D shapes.

Idea 3. Ice painting

Another really fun way to help keep your child cool when it’s hot is to do some ice painting. All you need to do is freeze a few blocks of poster paint in an ice cube tray, use lollipop sticks in the middle so that your child can hold the paint once frozen. If you don’t have lollipop sticks you can use anything, sticks, pencils or even smaller paint brushes.

Having a cool bath before bed can really help your child sleep and a fabulous way to keep your child cool when it’s hot. Add 2 washing up bowls of warm water and one of cold and add some bubble bath. You could even add a few drops of lavender if you want to get them ready for a nice relaxing sleep. If you don’t have a paddling pool you could still just use a Lukewarm washing up bowl with bubble bath and a flannel to have a fun wash down.

Idea 5. Make some watermelon lemonade

Watermelon is a fantastic way to keep your child cool when it’s hot. You can simply cut it up and eat it to keep your child hydrated or If you have a blender you can make some watermelon lemonade. Simply pop some watermelon in the blender, add the juice of one lemon, some honey if you like (remember do not give honey to babies under 1 years old) then pour the liquid into a jug using a sieve. Once you have done this simply add some sparkling water mix and enjoy. It’s such a refreshing drink and a great way to keep your child cool when it’s hot.
