Playing piano can help children develop skills that are considered beneficial throughout their lives.
Piano lessons for kids has many benefits, this includes:
It is said that confidence will increase hugely in children who learn the piano. The sense of achievement they feel when they’ve mastered a new note, chord or favourite song alone is huge. However it’s also the confidence it takes to perform in front of others. Whether it is their family, friends, loved ones or a larger audience it is all still hugely beneficial in growing confidence.
Learning the piano gives children chance to perform and tools for public speaking. It gives them the opportunity to be comfortable knowing that they might make a mistake, and the confidence to carry on when and if they do. It’s a skill most adults haven’t mastered.
Learning the piano takes patience and perseverance – but it is extremely rewarding. Children will need to listen carefully and focus on the instructions given. This helps to develop their listening skills and in turn produce music as a result
Being able to concentrate for long periods of time and understanding the benefits of practice and commitment means this will increase their resilience to problems they face. There are also huge academic and social benefits.
Playing the piano or learning to play a musical instrument is said to improve self-esteem, relieve stress and reduce feelings of anxiety. We have previously done a blog article all about the “Music Lessons – What age should a child start?”
Here at Club Hub, our directory is filled with thousands of music lessons for children, so in this article we had spoken to a few providers to tell us a bit more about their businesses and at what age they should start learning. You may find this a useful read when wondering at what age your child should start taking piano lessons.
Here at Club Hub after speaking with many piano tutors and from our own experience we believe that there is no magic or right age. However, typically due to the physical development of fine and gross motor skills as well as the ability for a child to listen, retain information and enjoy playing we believe a really good age to start piano lessons is typically between the ages of 6 and 9-years-old. Older students may have an easier time learning to play, students as young as 6-years-old can also learn since the keys of the piano are easy to operate.
“In 2013, the Beijing Normal University released the results of a study which concluded that individuals who started learning the piano before the age of seven benefited from advanced cognitive skills later in life. The benefits remained even for those who stopped practicing in their teenage years”.
However in the same article Linda Lorenzo – Director for Learning and Engagement with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra – explains that she believes that “there is no real ideal age”. Her advice is in the “physical nature and interests of the child” for instance. “A child who is physically strong might suit a brass instrument. A child with large hands might suit the piano.”
If we think of famous pianists, Mozart and Lang Lang began learning the piano at age three. Sir András Schiff began at age five.
