Published on 5th October 2020 by Tessa Robinson

Is your child interested in martial arts? Would they like to join one of their local martial arts classes? Here at Club Hub, our directory is filled with thousands of martial arts classes, so we have spoken to a few providers to tell us a bit more about the different types of martial arts classes suitable for children to join.

What are the different types of Martial Arts Classes suitable for kids?

What are the different types of Martial Arts Classes suitable for kids?Martial arts as an extracurricular activity has exploded in popularity over recent years and with that, there is now a huge choice of classes available. It can be quite confusing with all the unusual sounding names of groups and terms that are used to know which martial arts group would be the best one for your child or children.

Firstly, it is best to find out if your child or children have any friends that attend a local martial arts group as that can be a great ice breaker for your child if they know or recognise someone in the class. If you don’t have the luxury of knowing anyone attending a class, then the next best thing is to look at all the options in your local area.

In principle, there are two main areas of focus in martial arts, striking or grappling/wrestling. This of course, is a very rudimentary way of explaining what the club does but if your child has shown an interest in kicking and punching then it maybe best that you try and have that as a focal point.

For example, if a club advertise themselves as karate, taekwondo, kickboxing, boxing and kung fu, they will primally focus on striking.

Alternatively, you may have come across a group such as Judo, Jujitsu, and BJJ (Brazilian Jiujitsu) they will focus predominately on wrestling aspects and have very little to no striking.

Of course, parents and children are drawn to martial arts for many different reasons and to find the most suitable martial arts club is sometimes not easy. For me, it is more about the coaching and instructing staff rather than the content or the style of the martial art. Make sure that you are happy with the way the staff interact with your child and the group. Don’t be frightened to ask questions to the instructor about what they are going to cover or
what they expect your child to learn.

Lastly ask about any additional costs other than the class fee and the intervals you are expected to pay them, as cost can be another factor on your group choice.

Martial arts can and does become a lifelong passion for people, so taking the time to focus on the group and how long they have been established is also something to warrant when choosing a group. If you have selected the right group, then your child or children could be involved in this past time for very long time.

In fact, that was exactly the first experience that I had as a child when I was introduced to martial arts and that time, I would have never thought that it would become my career! I have been teaching myself for over 25 years and know the importance in helping guide parents with exactly the things I have discussed in the hope that their child or children finds a passion for martial arts like I did that now has become my whole life.

There are many martial arts classes available to children.Nearly all, from Karate to Kung Fu, will have ‘kids class’ equivalent at all clubs across country. The Afro-Brazilian art-form of Capoeira has something at the heart of it that sets it apart from all other martial arts. Capoeira is a movement art-form that includes dance, martial arts, acrobatics, music, language and culture.

Capoeira has it’s roots in African tradition, such as live music of drums (atabaque), tambourines (pandeiro) and the unique and characteristic Berimbau, and the call and response song of the Roda (circle), within which the Capoeira “Game” is played. This idea of “play”, as opposed to competition, is at the heart of Capoeira, encouraging cooperation, respect, creativity and individual expression, which makes it unique as a martial art and also ideal for children.

At Capoeira for All CIC in Liverpool, we place these values and the excitement of the movement and music at the heart of all our classes. Over the last 5 years, we have built a huge community of families that have seen the benefit for their children on their social, personal and physical development. We run regular classes in the Toxteth area of Liverpool and run classes for children 3 years and upwards. For more information get in touch through our website at www.capoeiraforall.org. We’d love to hear from you!

“Your Capoeira sessions have really helped Maia over these past few months. The positivity and the Capoeira for All family has been brilliant for mind, body and spirit during these strange times. Thanks so much!” – Phoebe, Maia’s Mum.
