Books have the power to spark imagination, build confidence, and help children and teens navigate the world around them. Whether it’s exploring neurodiversity, celebrating individuality, or encouraging self-expression, the right book can make a lasting impact. In this guide, we’re highlighting some of the best books for children and teens, written by passionate authors who are shaping the way young readers understand themselves and others. From autism-friendly stories and inclusive adventures to empowering tales about embracing who you are, these books are must-reads for families, educators, and young minds everywhere.
In 2019, Nikki Saunders wrote ‘My Awesome Autism’ for her son Tyler as he wanted to explore his autism diagnosis. Nikki created an autistic character named Eddie, after his Great Grandfather! Tyler’s reaction to the book and Eddie was so beautiful that she went on to write more Eddie books which lead on to create ‘Ready Eddie Go’ TV series on Sky Kids!
The Ready Eddie GO! books developed from the Ready Eddie Go! animated TV show takes the young reader through day to day experiences that an autistic child may find challenging providing gentle and supportive strategies! With new experiences such as ‘Eddie’s First Haircut’ to ‘The Birthday Party ‘and ‘Painting’ each book uses clear structure as well as visuals to help readers understand the story and identify strategies that may help when faced with similar experiences to Eddie.
The series includes:
Mama G is a storytelling panto dame who shares stories, with children and their families, about being who you want and loving who you are. This work has taken her all over the UK, through to the Britain’s Got Talent semi-finals, and led to her being described in the Metro as “everyone’s favourite pantomime dame.”
She firmly believes that panto can educate as well as entertain, and can help everyone believe in the power of being themselves. This, combined with her love of panto, resulted in Graffeg publishing her first picture Oh Yes I Am! in 2024. The book offers a gently encouraging mantra, as Bobby discovers the grey world he lives in becomes more colourful when he’s confident being the fabulous person he is. How does he learn this? A fabulous pantomime dame of course – in much the same way that Mama G has inspired 1000s of children in the last 7 years! It’s almost autobiographical!
Anyone who has already seen Mama G reading the book at places such as the Cheltenham Literature Festival or the West End’s Boulevard Theatre will know that it is accompanied by an uplifting album, featuring songs by Holly Mallett who plays Moxy on CBBC’s Andy and the Oddsocks. It’s great fun, and really offers the book a new dimension!
If you’d like to see Mama G reading the book in person you will undoubtedly be able to catch her at a library, theatre, festival, or museum near you. To make sure you don’t miss out, join Mama G on the socials and keep up to date!

From a young age I felt like I was living in a world where I felt misunderstood. It felt lonely and scary. I never want any kid/young person to feel the way I did. Being different can be beautiful and I want to show children that their differences doesn’t need to be something that stops them from achieving great things. I want them to feel understood, and less alone. Everything that I wanted when I was young. So I hope my books do just that.
No child should be made to feel less than because of something they cannot control. So far I have a book on emotions, autism and ADHD. I hope to write and create more in the future.
Writing has saved my life. I hope to share my voice to the world.
From a girl who felt misunderstood to a girl helping others to understand themselves better.
