Excited to code in a group of fun, engaging tutors who “get you”? Code Club Sanderlings Drop-In Sessions is the home-schooling pathway of the Southend Music STEAM Tech Clubs, built for children aged 8 to 11 who learn outside the traditional classroom and whose parents want a genuine, deep learning experience — not just a one-off activity session.
At the centre of everything we do is Creative Music Tech Coding that challenges and inspires. We use the language of music — rhythm, pattern, cause and effect, listening, composing — as the on-ramp into computational thinking. A child who has never written a line of code in their life can, within a single session, understand why a loop repeats, why a sequence matters, and why a small change at the start changes everything at the end — because they’ve just watched, and heard, it happen in a piece of music they built themselves, on devices like the BBC micro:bit and Raspberry Pi. This isn’t decoration — it’s deliberate pedagogy. Music gives abstract coding concepts a body, a sound, and a feeling, which is exactly what many 8 to 11 year olds — particularly the sensory, hands-on, non-linear thinkers who make up a large part of our home-schooling community — need for a concept to truly land.
