Club Hub is proud to support Club Hub member and award finalist Gemma Anyon as she campaigns for better mental health and mentoring support for children in care and care leavers across the UK.
Gemma is calling on the public, including the Club Hub community, children’s activity providers and families, to help her petition reach 10,000 signatures and raise vital awareness of the support available to some of society’s most vulnerable young people.
Her petition calls on the Government to make one-to-one mentoring a statutory right for children in care and care leavers, alongside guaranteed trauma-informed mental health support.
The petition asks the Government to introduce a statutory right to trauma-informed one-to-one mentorship and guaranteed mental health support for every child in care and care leavers up to the age of 25, funded by the Government.
Children can enter the care system having already experienced significant trauma, abuse or neglect. Gemma believes that consistent, trusted one-to-one support could make an enormous difference to their emotional wellbeing, confidence and future.
The campaign argues that providing early, trauma-informed mentorship is a preventative approach, helping young people receive support before they reach crisis point.
For many children, clubs, activities, mentors, coaches and other trusted adults can provide stability, encouragement and a sense of belonging.
However, Gemma believes children who have experienced the care system need greater access to consistent, specialist support that understands the impact trauma can have throughout childhood and into early adulthood.
Her campaign highlights concerns surrounding outcomes including self-harm, suicide attempts, homelessness and criminalisation among care-experienced young people and argues that earlier intervention could improve lives while reducing the long-term pressure placed on public services.
Gemma has already been raising national awareness of the issue and spoke to ITV News Granada about her campaign for better mental health support for care leavers.
Her story highlights why she believes changes to the current system are so urgently needed and why access to mental health support should not depend on where a young person lives or the individual circumstances of their care.
