Tips for Creating Picture Book for Your Kids

Published on 15th October 2024 by Tessa Robinson

How to Create a Photo Book of Your Kids’ Most Memorable Moments?

Even though we shoot thousands of photos every year, only a small fraction of them makes it into photo albums or onto our walls. That being said, one of the best ways to fully appreciate your photographs is to create and publish a series of photo books.

A photo book is a wonderful keepsake since it allows you to remember the good times, commemorate milestones, and, most importantly, reminisce with fondness after the children have grown up or when your life has changed. If you’re interested in making picture books for children, here are a few easy steps to follow to make a high-quality book.

How to Create a Photo Book of Your Kids' Most Memorable Moments?

Select a Style

The design you chose for your children’s picture book should represent the memories they created since it is a storybook for you. The good thing is that the internet has sites that can help you create beautiful photo books online. With the help of these online templates, you can find unique styles that help you beautifully display your children’s favourite photos in a personalised way.

Unlike old-fashioned scrapbooks, which require cutting and pasting, modern photo books include pre-designed designs. Feel free to experiment with different colour schemes, typefaces, and picture placements to create the ideal unique photo book for you. You can even add or remove pages as you want.

Organise by Chronological Order

The best photobooks follow a general chronological sequence. One approach would be to arrange the images monthly. Keep all the images from the same month together; the exact days don’t matter too much. This way, you can look back on your photobook and see the progression your kids have made through the years. Do not worry if the thought of arranging your photographs in chronological order is daunting or if you are unsure of the precise dates. Feel free to add any photographs that make you happy!

Create Collection Albums: Not Annual Albums

Although making an album once a year is a common habit and has many advantages, it’s not the only option for preserving your children’s memories and may not even be the “best” method to look back on them.

Just in case your inner critic starts picking on you because your kids’ antics aren’t perfectly documented in a yearly album, try to look at it from a different angle and remind yourself that you’re making a conscious decision not to do so. It’s a profound change in perspective!

Less books equals less chaos. This is a huge plus if you are a minimalist. Additionally, it’s easier to find the exact picture you’re looking for with collections.

Capture Real Moments: Don’t Use Only Professional Shots

If you’re going to shell out cash for a picture book, it’s tempting to assume you should skimp on the quality and include just the most edited or professionally shot images. However, you will lose out on the opportunity to form more authentic memories if you limit yourself to only those.

Taking photos in ideal surroundings isn’t always going to result in the most enjoyable images for your children. Everyday events, like playing with a beloved toy, snuggling up in bed, or wearing that one item of clothing they were really enamoured with (“That shirt was really cute!”), might be their favourites.

They’ll have a blast looking at pictures of themselves in their costume for school activities, helping to wash the vehicle, or constructing cardboard forts in the yard. These pictures remind them of how much fun they had and how they felt at the time. It also doesn’t matter if most of these hastily taken pictures aren’t technically flawless; after all, even photographers make mistakes from time to time. The most important thing is to capture those moments as they are since it is what they will treasure forever.

Edit

Even if you shoot most of your images using your phone, you won’t need any expensive editing tools like Photoshop or Lightroom to give them a little tweak here and there. A little modification to the highlights and shadows, coupled with a little brightness and vibrancy increase, should do the trick for most phone images.

Remember that printed images tend to seem darker than their mobile screen counterparts. To get a better sense of how the final product will look in print, consider reducing the brightness of your editing screen to around 80%. You can always apply filters—there are many applications for that—but my biggest piece of advice is to not go overboard; instead, love your skin as it is! While the orange skin filter may be trendy at the moment, think of the awkwardness that may arise when your children look at their childhood pictures and ask why they’re so orange!

Wrapping Up

A picture album is something you can look back on with joy and nostalgia. Creating a picture book with your child is not only a wonderful way to preserve their childhood memories, but it also strengthens family bonds, boosts self-esteem, and sheds light on their early behaviours. It brings joy and leaves a lasting impression of love between parents and children. Lastly, picture albums may instantly brighten someone’s day!
