Published on 24th July 2023 by Tessa Robinson

Summertime is here! Are you planning to travel with kids this summer? If you are and would like some ideas of travel activities for kids then this is the blog for you.

Have you ever heard that famous line “are we nearly there yet?”. Sometimes when you have literally just been travelling 5 minutes and you know you have hours ahead. This can be exhausting. Children, especially younger children, especially younger ones, often tend to get bored very quickly.

Travel activities for kids can be fantastic for children to explore new activities, see and learn new things, and play time-tested road trip games. In this blog we will look at fun travel activities for kids and some top tips for travel. Sometimes the journey can be just as exciting as the destination

Travel Activities for Kids – Our Top Tips

Travel activities for kids - Top Tips

  • Before you travel with kids anywhere visit the toilet. There’s nothing worse than having to stop 10 minutes in to your journey because someone needs a wee
  • That being said travelling with kids will take extra time. To avoid stress double your estimated time to get ready. If someone does need to stop for the toilet then you will have time to do so.
  • Snacks are fantastic. Take some healthy snacks like breakfast bars, pitas, raisins are all great as they are slow releasing energy and not too messy!
  • Invest in a travel tray! Travel trays can be an absolute Godsend! They allow your child to enjoy travel activities for kids and keep all their supplies on them and be able to independently grab them when they want. They will be able to colour in on their tray, have their snacks whilst keeping everything organised and tidy.
  • Prepare. Understandably you cannot prepare everything but anything you do prepare will help you have a smoother journey when you travel with kids. Prepare snacks, printables, colouring in, and charge electronic devices.
  • Limit screen time. Although screen time can seem like a great boredom passer on long journeys. Too much screen time can make your child agitated and too much screen time at once isn’t great for children. Try and prepare travel activities for kids that may also make them feel travel sick. Put on a timer and allow your child to use their device if you wish for that allocated time.
  • Audiobooks can help relax your children and make the journey go much quicker.
  • Play simple games! Don’t underestimate the power of a simple eye spy game. You will be surprised how much entertainment this can provide and how memorable playing a game like this can be for your child. If they are younger you could adjust it so that you look for things with a certain colour. For example “I spy with my little eye something that is green”
  • While I spy is a classic game, sometimes the kids are looking for a bit more of a challenge. Online games are another excellent choice for traveling, as many can be played on and offline for those areas with little reception. Popular games like Spades and Uno online offer a range of benefits including convenience, skill development, and social interaction, making them excellent travel entertainment options for families with kids. The online versions of these games are portable, flexible, and educational, thereby enhancing the travel experience for everyone involved.

Keeping  Your Child Safe

Keeping  Your Child Safe

Go through your itinerary with your children. Children like to know what’s going on, otherwise they can feel quite anxious about the trip and may display this with unwanted behaviours. If you are travelling by plane then why not show them a video of what will happen at the airport (many airlines have a virtual tour online). If you are on a roadtrip, show them a map with some stops you are going to make along the way and do checkpoints.

Pack a first aid kit. Hopefully this won’t be needed but it’s always important to make sure when you are travelling you have a first aid bag with you. Also ensure you have any prescribed medications, inhalers and tablets for headaches, allergies and if anyone is travel sick ensure to pack travel sickness tablets too. Ensure that any medication you may need is securely put away but in an accessible place.

If your child gets lost despite your best efforts, you’ll want them to have your contact information. They will need your name, phone number,e -mail address, home address.

For young children, the best way to share contact information is with a note or a little card, ID bracelet, necklace. Older children can memorise your phone number and email address or where you are staying, write it down for them or have them put the information on their phones.

Arguably most importantly when you travel with kids – accept that things will go wrong! Travel with kids is no easy feat. Things may and will go wrong. And if it does try and breathe and think perspective. At that moment it can feel like the end of the world. But don’t put a damper on your holiday before it’s even started!
