The Mental Health Benefits of Activities for Children

Published on 1st November 2022 by Tessa Robinson

Mental health is a really important part of our development. Guiding your child through managing their mental health will greatly improve their personal progress, but they can also learn different techniques. Activities are a brilliant way to get children out and about, exploring and developing their resilience skills.

Here are some other key benefits to your child’s mental health when they pick up lots of different activities on a regular basis.

Improved brain function

Whether your child is getting involved in trying out a new exercise or sport, or they’re heading outdoors, making art indoors or something else, their brain function is gradually improving. For one, lots of different activities require good hand-eye coordination and a grasp of fine motor skills. This means your child is slowly improving their ability to concentrate, switch off from the outside world for a while and embrace the fun they’re having.

An increase in all those happy chemicals

When we feel happy, we release serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin and endorphins – all of which help us balance our mood. This is seen from a young age as well, which is why helping your child pick up lots of different activities will give them a lot more confidence in their skills.

We all want to see our children feel happy and healthy, which is why picking up a range of activities is recommended all the time. See which ones your child might want to pursue, from arts and crafts to volunteering, board games and more.

Reduces your child’s anxiety

School can feel like a stressful time at certain moments in your child’s studying journey. This is why many schools, just like this private school in Herts, will give your child a lot of extracurricular activities and recommendations for activity centres and events outside of school.

It gives your child a place to unwind and decompress from their school work, but also anything else that might be worrying them. It helps them learn to be confident and more resilient as well, which is great for the mind.

Improved communication skills

Communicating is important to a child’s mental health for a range of reasons. For one it helps your child know when they should be going to seek help. Activities often rely on children talking to others in groups, which will also teach your child how to be a good team player.

There’s also the improved self-esteem through socialising with others. Making friends and talking to those that they trust on a regular basis will help your child with their management of their feelings, and know who to turn to if they need help.

Mental health is really important for children to pick up and understand. There’s a lot your child can learn from being aware of their mental health, which is why hobbies and passions are so often recommended to our little ones.
