Changing of the Guard – Free things to do in London with kids
If you are looking for free things to do in London with kids, The Changing of the Guard is definitely a very memorable ceremony that is bound to stick in your children’s head for many years. It is when the Foot Guards currently guarding the monarchy are relieved from their duty, to be replaced with new soldiers. It was made an official job role by King Henry VII 520 years ago. You can view this from Buckingham Palace. Typically the ceremony takes place on Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between January and May and August to December. (Daily in June and July).

London has some amazing playgrounds if you are looking for free things to do in London with kids this would definitely be a fun thing for them to do. Here are the playgrounds we recommend.
- St Giles Playground, Covent Garden – A well hidden quiet and tranquil park . It’s right next door to the beautiful Phoenix Garden which is great if you are looking for free things to do in London – great for picnics
- Horseferry Playground, Victoria Tower Gardens, Westminster -This is a great playground. It’s right next to the river. It has great views of the Palace of Westminster. It’s also around the corner from Tate Britain. It has slides, roundabouts, bridges, swings, a water feature, clean toilets and even a place to buy food and drink.
- Hornimans Adventure Playgound, North Kensington – The playground was set up unofficially by local parents in 1969.
- Wembley Park Play Park, Wembley – An undercover play area that you can enjoy in all weathers with two big towers, a walkway and tunnel slide
- Asteys Row Playground, Islington – This park features lots of different coloured boulders that children can climb on, a bug hotel, water play and adjoining rock garden.
- Causton Street Playground, Pimlico – If you are going to the Tate Museum this is a great park to go to due to the location. Doesn’t have lots of equipment but it has a little splash pad, sandpit and boat themed climbing frames
- Markfield Adventure Playground, Nort London – An inclusive community hub where people can play, socialise and get information and support.
- Finsbury Park – A pretty and fun playground which has a sandpit, green metal structures, a wooden playhouse with a slide, a bouncy bridge, swings, a hillside slide, among other bits and pieces
- Coram’s Fields, Bloomsbury – this features a huge toddler playground inside an enormous sandpit that has water in the summer, a treehouse climbing frame with windy slides and a little city farm with goats and chickens!
- Diana Memorial Playground, Kensington Gardens, Queensway – A little busy and big but lots of fun. It’s a Peter Pan-themed Playground. It has a pirate ship climbing frame, teepee playhouses. It also has a sand and water area to the treetop walkway. clean children’s toilets and an outdoor cafe.
- Adventure Play Hub, St John’s Wood – An open, bright natural space with a variety of trees, plants & thriving wildlife.
Platform 9 and ¾
A great thing you can do if you are looking for free things to do in London with kids. As you would imagine, you can find this at Kings Cross Station. For any Harry Potter Fans this is perfect if you are hunting for free things to do in London with kids. So go to Kings Cross Station and have a Photograph with you and your child pretending to push the trolley into the wall!
Take a London Bus
This is free for children under 11 and a fantastic way to spend the day. It’s a great cheaper alternative to paying for an open bus top tour. You will have so much fun. you will be able to see lots of fantastic sights of London from the top deck of the good old London bus on certain routes.
It’s important to note that you will need a travel card or a credit card as they don’t take cash on the buses anymore.
