Join us this summer as we complete an exciting residency across Barnsley museums!
River Detectives with Amazelab
7th August 2026
Dive into discovery with our River Detectives workshop, where families explore the hidden world of river ecosystems!
Get hands-on identifying fascinating river creatures (using models and activity cards), then take on the challenge of building your own balanced ecosystem.
Along the way, uncover how habitats and food chains keep nature in harmony in this engaging, science-filled adventure.
Booking info: Aimed at 5+ and their families – this workshop incudes activities by the water – maximum of 2 x children to 1 adult.
Please come prepared to be outside in suitable waterproofs and sensible outdoor footwear. Places are limited at £5 per child. Book via the links below:

Wind and Wings with Amazelab

Join our magical Wind & Wings: Flying Mystical Creatures Workshop, where storytelling meets science in a hands-on family adventure!
Design and build your own mystical gliders or wings, then test how far they can fly as you explore the forces of lift, gravity, and wind.
Experiment, measure distances, and improve your creations together in this fun STEAM-inspired session.
This activity is suitable for anyone aged 5+
Free drop-in between 11am – 12.30pm and 1pm – 3pm.

Crazy Contraptions with Amazelab

Get inventive at our Crazy Contraptions workshop, where families can build wacky Rube Goldberg-style machines using everyday objects inspired by the surroundings of Elsecar Hertitage Centre!
Create incredible chain reactions and watch as one simple action triggers a series of surprising effects.
It’s a playful, hands-on way to explore physics and cause-and-effect while letting your imagination run wild.
This activity is suitable for anyone aged 5+
