5 Rainy Day Activities for Kids

Published on 1st September 2024 by Tessa Robinson

When a rainy day arrives it doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. The weekends and during school breaks are going to be when your child will need the most attention, and so you should have plenty of activities in the bank for these scenarios. RGS Guildford has 5 indoor kids activities you can try out with your child when the rain hits hard. And if you have any other suggestions, feel free to share with us too!

5 Indoor Kids Activities for Rainy Days

1. Board games on a Rainy Day

A lot of children fall into the habits of playing video games or games on a tablet, phone, and other devices. All of that screen time can give children headaches and heightened stress. While they’re not inherently bad for children it’s all about the amount of time they spend doing something.

Board games are a good way to take your child away from the usual activities they can get bogged down with when it rains. Involving everyone in the home, spend a couple of hours on a board game or two, and change it up every now and then.

If your child really enjoys board games then you can use it as an opportunity to look into different games at a board game cafe and try them out together.

2. Set up everything you need for a spa day

Draw a nice hot bath, grab some bubble bath or pick out some bath bombs at the shop, and grab some face masks. With the rain hammering down outside you can be making a cosy space for you and your child to unwind inside.

With days like these it’s always worth getting your child involved to see what they would suggest. Your child may just want to get some toys and pop them in the bath and have fun in that way. You can pick out face masks that are safe for their skin, or if none are suitable you can use bubble bath to replicate the results.

3. Build an indoor treasure hunt on a Rainy Day

While you can’t head outside to do that treasure hunt you’ve been planning you can bring it all into the home instead. Print out some treasure hunt sheets and see how many your child can find within the time limit. The sheet will serve as a checklist that your child will have to complete as they go along.

The winner, or the one with the most finds within the time limit, will get a grand prize. This will heat up the competition and get your children or their friends racing around the home to find the most treats in time! It’s great fun and your child will have plenty of fun.

4. Make your own pizzas together

With anything that involves cooking, it’s always good to get your child involved in making decisions. So, when you decide to make a pizza together, it’s going to be much more fun for them if you get them involved in choosing all the toppings and letting them make the pizza themselves.

It doesn’t matter what toppings they choose and how the pizza looks, so long as they’re having fun, are learning how a pizza is cooked, and they get to eat it after all their hard work is done! Maybe have a spare one in case it doesn’t turn out the way they hoped.

5. Make a jar of suggestions on a Rainy Day

If all else fails, and you and your child are stumped on what to do, then you grab a jar and fill it with different suggestions. Once they’ve all been written out you can place them inside, shake the jar around and pull out an idea. You will then have to stick to that idea no matter how everyone feels about it – something that can help your child learn to appreciate others’ choices.

You can then keep this around for times where you’re all stuck on what to do and can give you some motivation for next time.
