Club Description

Days: Saturdays during Term Time

Times: Various

Sparks filmmaking classes inspire imaginations, develop confidence, creativity and skills.

Class members learn all about the different aspects of filmmaking, from directing, to camera and photography skills, screenwriting, acting for camera, editing and more.

Under guidance from our team of workshop instructors, they explore professional film production techniques, covering pre-production through to post-production. They work towards their own film productions, gradually building up their portfolio of work, as well as their creative skillset.

Members learn how to direct scenes and sequences, tell stories and write their own screenplays. They develop camera and photography skills, as well as production skills. Members also explore acting for camera and perform in their productions. They create sound and lighting effects, edit their productions, create special effects and even more.

Through their active participation, filmmakers develop their imaginations. They learn to express their creativity and bring their ideas to life. Through our collaborative projects and experiences, they also develop their soft and transferable skills, including teamwork, communication and social skills.

The young filmmakers step into the professional roles you’ll find on a real film set. They become directors, crew, actors, editors, etc and work collaboratively to produce their own films.

It’s a programme that we’ve developed over the last 10 years. Our approach empowers young filmmakers. It accelerates the development of life skills such as teamwork, taking responsibility and decision-making. It’s also inclusive for children who learn in different ways and engage with individual interests.

The young crews love taking on all the different creative roles and taking responsibility for their individual and group contributions. They love the sense of ownership, as well as the space to express their ideas and viewpoints. It inspires them to try their best and to continually push their creativity.

What’s Involved?

Filmmaking classes are reopening from September 2020, with plenty of enhanced safety measures that we’ve tested over the summer.

The crew member work in ‘Studio’ groups of peer ages, progressing from the introductory Studio 1 (for ages 5-7) through to advanced Studio 5 (ages 14-18).

Membership is offered on a termly basis (10 weeks), which is renewable each term, though many children stay with us for several years. Each term, members work towards new learning outcomes and explore new techniques. Over time, they build up their skills and knowledge. They progress across different skills area each time.

During each class, the young crews take part in structured filmmaking and workshop activities, as well as undertaking work as a film crew on their own productions. At the end of each term, we share their productions in a special screening presentation. We also organise screening events and other celebrations throughout the year.
